Giving Up Self

By 2008, I was hiking into the woods with my camera whenever I got the chance. I had discovered how much joy there was in being naked outdoors, away from people, noise, expectations, and all the stuff I carried around in my head.

This image came out of that season. Curled up beneath these huge rocks, I look small and almost folded into the landscape. For me, that posture became about surrender. Not giving up in defeat, but giving up the need to control everything and remembering that I belong to God.

Those times in the woods also taught me something about sabbath and prayer. When I slowed down, got quiet, and stopped trying so hard, I often felt the most peace. Nature had a way of stripping everything back to something simple: God, creation, breath, and being present.

A look through the Giving Up Self contact sheet as I experimented with poses, nakedness, and surrender among the rocks and trees: trying to capture what it felt like to become quiet and surrender to God.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
